CURITIBA: IDEAL CITY?

Brazil, Curitiba

Curitiba, an ancient city of gold seekers, has developed today into the model city. A national and international role-model in urban planning and quality of life, conceived and developed for the well being of its inhabitants.
Central to it’s urban planning is an improvement of living conditions and a development of ecological awareness.
The city is awash with parks indeed there are 55 m2 of green areas for each inhabitant, three times the amount recommended by the World Health Organisation.
85% of its population use public transport. Buses form the basis of an intricate transport system. This is helped by one fixed price of ‘social tickets’, regardless of distance traveled.
Curitiba’s high rates of recycling is due partly to the implementation of a huge recycling campaign known as the "Green Exchange" which in turn contributes to the development of the collective ecological conscience. Once a week waste collection trucks cross the cities and exchange recyclable waste for food, toys, transportation tickets, and educational material.
The "Free University of the Environment ", the only one of its kind in the country, is a regular producer of sustainable development and environmental protection policies and projects

In March 2001 a United Nations report pronounced Curitiba as the best city to live in Brazil due to its high score on their index for life quality.
Today Curitiba has become one of the main destinations of Europeans who live in Brazil and the city attracts delegations of politicians, planners, environmentalists, and journalists looking to Curitiba for ideas to resolve their own urban problems.
