The XINHUA press agency is the official Press Agency of the Chinese Popular Republic, one of the modernst in the world. It is now seen by someone as a credible media on the same level as others international news agency. Xinhua currently diffuses more than 1 000 reports a day- 700 on international news and 300 on iinternal news. According to the official figures, the agency employs 8 400 people, of whom 1 900 are journalists and editors.
But the journalists of Reporters Without Borders consider that the agency remains an organ of propaganda in service of the interests of the C C P, the Chinese Communist Party. Its modernosation is very superficial. It is, according with the official definition, “the eyes, ears and voice of China”.
Successor to the agency, Red China that was founded by Mao Zedong, Xinhua adopted its current name in January 1937. Since October 1949, this state-run news agency has been completely subordinate to the CCP.
The Reporters Without Borders’ report 2005 includes accounts from several Xinhua journalists who agreed, on condition of anonymity, to explain how the control imposed by the CCP’s Propaganda Department operates on a daily basis. They called it as “ the world’s biggest propaganda Agency.”
In winter 2005, while China was experiencing an unprecedented economic development, the Xinhua’s French service, Chine Nouvelle, has decided to change face.
I document this moment of change.
